Avenged Sevenfold has issued the following update about entering the recording studio with Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. Avenged drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, who died in late December, was a huge fan and greatly influenced by Portnoy.
“I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it’s our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy’s all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev’s abilities.
“Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy.”

Sandy, it does it really matter what he looks like? that’s extremely superficial. He’s a legendary drummer and if Rev liked him, dammit, I’m cool with it. Check out some of his work with Dream Theater and then reconsider. For one, I’m thrilled to hear MP’s working with the boys. New album should be some killer stuff.

You all really need to study up on dramtheater and all of mike’s secondary projects. I loved the style that the rev brought to avenged but if you listen to dreamtheater a lot of his progressive feel comes from portnoy. The rev will leave his mark on avenged no doubt love that man.

MP is a legend no doubt, We should all give our support as Jimmy idolize him. Even though Jimmy and MP have different playing style, but i guarantee he’ll do a great job with the new single. I think ‘nightmare’ has already prove that he’s doing a good job. I know it would never be the same without The Rev, he still is my best drummer at heart but now that he’s gone, we should remember him and move on hoping the best for Avenged Sevenfold.

Wow. Some of you people are really upset because of how he looks? If the Rev looked up to him, obviously he’s a pretty sic drummer. The rest of A7X is stoked to have him to record this album for the Rev, so why can’t their fans? If you cared even an ounce, you’d be supportive of their decision and of them.

MP is by far the best drummer on earth. The Rev. was very good but not MP. I hope he has not left Dream Theater for good. If so, the best band in the world is no longer the best. by the way, Avenge needs a better vocalist, not a better drummer!

port is an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING drummer most people dont realize that dreamtheater is a MASSIVELY successful band overseas, there songs just dont fit into corporate americas 2.5-5minute song structure for radio, so they get no radio play, everyone of dreamtheaters members are aces on there instruments, and anyone with a ear for music will tell you the same, along with fellow musicians, recognized for there supurb talent, i think port filling in for the rev is amazing and it just goes to show how much port respected jimmy
