The 1996 gold medalist Kerri Strug was married to Robert Fischer in Tucson, Ariz. Strug, who lives in Washington D.C. and works for the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, met her husband through mutual friends. She admits that growing up, her life was so geared towards gymnastics that she didn’t date much.
It’s like I was living in this big gymnastics bubble. I never went to my high school dance, and didn’t date much, so my criteria for dating men was really just put together in theory, not practice. Bela Karolyi, the coach who famously carried Strug around after her vault, was in attendance at the wedding. No word on if he yelled, “C’mon Kerri! You can do it!” as she walked up the aisle.
