Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir has officially announced that he is indeed gay. In an interview with People magazine (promoting his new memoir “Welcome to My World,” of course) Weir says, “With people killing themselves and being scared into the closet, I hope that even just one person can gain strength from my story.”

Weir continues, “In a sexual way, I’m gay, but I would marry a woman tomorrow if it struck me. I don’t think sex and relationships necessarily have to go together.”

He also talks about his childhood, when he was often mistaken for a girl. In middle school, he says he was often called “homo” and “faggot” and mentions that he had an affair with another skater that he would only refer to as “Alex.”

Weir declares, “I’m not ashamed to be me. More than anyone else I know, I love my life and accept myself. What’s wrong with being unique? I am proud of everything that I am and will become.”
